Action Against Hunger
Agricultural decision-support platform. Data-driven crop and livestock planning, localised for Ethiopia.

The
challenge
An agricultural planning model built for the Netherlands had to be adapted to Ethiopia’s environment, economy and farming realities, then put in a form farmers could use.
Yaltopia Tech worked with Action Against Hunger to develop a digital agricultural decision-support platform that helps farmers choose the best crops to plant and livestock to raise, based on seasonal conditions, available resources and individual farm circumstances.
The solution adapted and localised a planning model originally developed in the Netherlands. Its recommendations helped farmers plan production cycles, reduce risk and make informed decisions, supporting more resilient livelihoods.
How we
did it
Farmers often plan with fragmented information about soil, weather, prices and good practice, and small planting decisions have a large effect on yield and income. Action Against Hunger had a proven agricultural planning model, but it was built for the Netherlands and had to be adapted to Ethiopia’s environment, economy and farming realities.
Our approach
We began by reviewing the original model, then localised it: seasons, prices and conditions were re-fitted to Ethiopia.
On top of the model we built a decision-support platform. Each farm gets a profile of its land and resources, and the platform recommends which crops to plant and which livestock to raise, and when, taking seasonal risk into account. Instead of reading long reports, farmers see recommendations tied to their own situation. The platform was field-tested before deployment.
The outcome
Farmers can plan production cycles, reduce risk and make better-informed decisions, which supports more resilient livelihoods. The project also shows how local data can power digital agriculture tools in Ethiopia.
